The article generally aims to demonstrate that Kant’s endeavor with Swedenborg must be considered productive, meaning that “Dreams of a Spirit-Seer” is not merely a slanderous text. Specifically, we will deal with the explanation of “obscure representations”, which, according to Swedenborg, have their basis in the coexistence of the mundus spiritualis (not intelligibilis!) and mundus sensibilis. This theorem proves highly compatible with Kant, leading to an attempt to reconstruct Swedenborg’s considerations ‘within the bounds of bare reason’: Kant’s profane explanation of (...) obscure representations ultimately refers back to semiotics, namely in the sense that the representations are understood as caused by pure rational beings. Obscure representations thus point as signs to a pre-critical ‘realm of ends’. The influence of pure rational beings also manifests itself in a moral-practical sense; it evokes a feeling opposed to egoism, which can easily be traced to the ‘feeling of respect’ or the ‘voice of reason’ from the critical writings. The ‘actual’ spirit-seeing, which Kant explains as a dislocated foco imaginario and thus as a mental defect, is to be distinguished from all of this, as it only describes the special case of the illegitimate externalization of these obscure representations. As will be shown at the end of the article, the theorems taken up in “Dreams of a Spirit-Seer” can be traced further to Kant’s very last writings. (shrink)

In der Vorrede zur ersten Auflage der Religionsschrift macht Kant unmissverständlich klar, dass der zur Moral verbundene Mensch der „Idee eines Wesens über ihm" nicht bedürfe. Damit ist aber nicht der Sinn und Zweck der nachfolgenden Schrift bestritten, sondern lediglich klargestellt, dass auch Religion und Kirchenglauben unter dem Prinzipat des Autonomiegedankens stehen. Ausgehend von dieser Feststellung entwickelt Kant eine in vier Stücke gegliederte Schrift, die nicht nur den aufgeklärten Umgang mit positiven Religionen beschreibt, sondern die auch die moralphilosophischen Schriften der (...) 1780er Jahre bisweilen ergänzt, bisweilen modifiziert. So wird beispielsweise die Sphäre moralischer Verbindlichkeiten um eine Gattungspflicht, nämlich eine Pflicht „des menschlichen Geschlechts gegen sich selbst" erweitert und auch das in den Bereich der Anthropologie fallende Theorem des „Hanges zum Bösen" erweist sich als in hohem Maße diskutabel. Dass zu alledem das letzte Wort noch nicht gesprochen ist, zeigt die in den letzten Jahrzehnten wieder anhebende Diskussion, der der vorliegende Band Rechnung trägt, indem er zu etwa gleichen Teilen historisch und systematisch ausgerichtet ist und vieles an interessanten Neubewertungen bereithält. Abweichend vom orthodoxen Marxismus reduziert Adler indessen die Dialektik auf eine bloße Methodenlehre der Sozialwissenschaft, welcher keine Realdialektik des geschichtlichen Seins entsprechen soll. Ebenso lehnt Adler – darin einig mit anderen Theoretikern der zweiten Internationale wie Karl Kautsky und Karl Liebknecht – die Verbindung von wissenschaftlichem Sozialismus und Materialismus ab: der wahre Marxismus sei "in Wirklichkeit sozialer Idealismus". Der historische Materialismus verkehrt sich für Adler im Grunde in subjektiven Idealismus. Sein besonderes Interesse galt denn auch folgerichtig einer erkenntniskritischen Grundlegung der (...) Soziologie, in der die Marx'schen Motive eine Verbindung mit dem Transzendentalismus Kants eingegangen sind. Den formalen Begriff von Demokratie kritisierend, differenzierte Adler zwischen der politischen Demokratie als Herrschaftsorganisation der bürgerlichen Klasse und einer sozialen Demokratie, in der mit den Klassengegensätzen zugleich die Unterdrückung abgeschafft sein und an ihre Stelle eine "solidarische Verwaltungsreform" der Gesellschaft treten solle. Die Errichtung einer sozialistischen Gesellschaft blieb für Adler gebunden an das Marx'sche 'Zerbrechen der Staatsmaschinerie'. Adler schrieb diese Abhandlung im Jahr 1904. (shrink)

Der Jenenser Philosoph Heinrich Köhler versucht in seinen Exercitationes Juris Naturalis, eiusque cumprimis cogentis, methodo systematica propositi eine rationalistische Begründung des Naturrechts auf der Basis der Metaphysik von Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Die Rekonstruktion dieser metaphysischen Begründung, die mit dem Aufweiß der Erkennbarkeit des obersten Prinzips des Naturrechts rein aus der Vernunft zusammenfällt, ist Gegenstand der vorliegenden Studie. Ausgehend von der Identifikation jenes Erkenntnisgrundes mit der Natur des Menschen zeigt sich vermittels einer Analyse der von Köhler in Anschlag gebrachten Methode, daß (...) diese Begründung unter Ausschluß bloßer empirischer Erkenntnis auf einen metaphysisch fundierten teleologischen Begriff der menschlichen Natur führt. Der verpflichtende Charakter des Naturrechtsprinzips erwächst demnach daraus, daß seine Achtung dem Menschen eine artgemäße Existenz aller erst ermöglicht. Vor diesem Hintergrund erweist sich auch die Schwäche einer solchen Theorie bei der Beurteilung einzelner Handlungen als moralisch, auf die Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten in seinem Ius Naturae indirekt und kritisch aufmerksam macht. In his Exercitationes Juris Naturalis, eiusque cumprimis cogentis, methodo systematica propositi , the Jena philosopher Heinrich Köhler attempts to provide a rational foundation for natural law based on Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's metaphysics. This paper examines a reconstruction of this metaphysical foundation, which coincides with demonstrating that pure reason can recognize the supreme principle of natural law. Assuming that this recognition can be identified with human nature, an analysis of Köhler's methodology shows that if mere empirical recognition is excluded his foundation leads to a metaphysically based teleological concept of human nature. The principle of natural law imposes obligations because only through respecting it can a human being live in a manner adequate for his species. Against this background, the weakness of this type of theory for determining whether an act is moral becomes apparent, which Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten indirectly and critically notes in his Ius Naturae. We describe the rationale for an application ontology covering the domain of human body fluids that is designed to facilitate representation, reuse, sharing and integration of diagnostic, physiological, and biochemical data, We briefly review the Blood Ontology (BLO), Saliva Ontology (SALO) and Kidney and Urinary Pathway Ontology (KUPO) initiatives. We discuss the methods employed in each, and address the project of using them as starting point for a unified body fluids ontology resource. Makalenin temel fikirlerinden birisi, kendine has özgür ve değişime açık yapısıyla, diğer kültürlerdeki eşdeğerlerinden farkını ortaya koyan ulemanın, Osmanlı Devleti’nin başarısında büyük rolü olduğu öngörüsüdür. Devletin yüksek eğitim kurumları olan medreselerde eğitim faaliyetlerini yürüten bu ulema (ilmiye teşkilatı); ilmi birikimi, hayatı anlamlandırma çabaları, evrensel bakış açıları ile topluma yön verebilecek seviyedeydi. Makalede ele alınan temel problem, 18. ve 19. asırlara gelince ulemada görülen hızlı prestij düşüşünün manipüle edilip edilmediğini ortaya koymaktır. Makalenin önemsediği diğer bir mesele, 1839 Tanzimat Fermanı’nın ilanından sonra (...) daha çok Batı kültürünün etkisi ile ulemanın karşısında konuşlanan aydınlardır. Bu aydınlar kısa sürede ulemanın Osmanlı Devleti’ndeki yerini almaya başlamış ve Batı kültürünün bir nevi temsilcileri pozisyonuna gelmişlerdir. Bu yeni reformistlerin, İslâm dünyasında Müslümanlığı muhafaza ederken Batılılaşmayı amaçlamaları yeni bir ikilem oluşturmuştur. Makalenin amacı, ortaya çıkan bu paradoksu tarihsel zemininde incelemek, toplum üzerinde nasıl bir etki ve algı oluşturduğunu ortaya çıkarmaktır. Araştırmada “tarihî araştırma yöntemi” kullanılmıştır. Bu yöntemle araştırmanın konusunu oluşturan dönem eleştirel bir gözle incelenip, doğru bir şekilde tahlil edilmeye gayret edilmiştir. (shrink)

ALLISON THE CLAIMTHAT KANT'S IDEALISM,or at least certain strands of it, is essentially identical to that of Berkeley has a long and distinguished history. It was first voiced by several of Kant's contemporaries such as Mendelssohn, Herder, Hamann, Pistorius and Eberhard who attacked the alleged subjectivism of the Critique of Pure Reason. 1 This viewpoint found its sharpest contemporary expression in the notorious (...) Garve-Feder review to which Kant responded at length in the Prolegomena. In subsequent times it has been championed by Schopenhauer, and most nineteenth century German commentators on the relation between the two philosophers. 2 In addition, it has been, and continues to be, the prevailing view of the vast majority of British writers on Kant, including, with significant qualifications, Norman Kemp Smith. 3 This tradition continues despite the fact that Kant specifically, and in no uncertain terms, repudiated this identification in the Prolegomena and the second edition of the Critique. In both works he responds to the charges of subjectivism, and in so doing distinguishes his position from that of Berkeley, who in the eighteenth century was commonly regarded as a solipsist and denier of the "external world." 4 In contra-distinction to Kant's own critical or transcendental idealism, which explains the possibility of synthetic a priori knowledge within the realm of possible experience, Berkeley is characterized as a "dogmatic" or "visionary idealist." Die Begriffe "kollektive Amnesie" und "organisiertes Vergessen" werden oft verwendet, um Fälle zu beschreiben, in denen historisches Wissen, das im gesellschaftlichen, kollektiven Gedächtnis verfügbar sein sollte – weil es sich beispielsweise um gerechtigkeitsrelevantes Wissen handelt – aus unterschiedlichen, meist politisch problematischen Gründen nicht verfügbar ist. Beispielsweise, weil es gegebene Herrschaftsverhältnisse bedrohen würde. In diesem Beitrag soll gezeigt werden, weshalb diese Begriffe gerade in solchen Fällen irreführend sind. Insbesondere nationale Erinnerungspolitik kann oftmals aus Erkenntnispraktiken bestehen oder befördern, die nicht primär Vergessen (...) herbeiführen, sondern in der Gesellschaft verfügbares Wissen über bestimmte Themen verschleiern, verzerren und dadurch die gesellschaftliche Verständigung darüber erschweren oder sogar riskant macht; was vor allem in Fällen offensichtlich wird, in denen koloniale und genozidale Vergangenheiten systematisch geleugnet werden. So kann staatlich geförderte, systematische Genozidleugnung zwar durchaus selektiv zu „vergessen“ oder Wissensverlust führen. Doch viel problematischer aus ethischer und epistemischer Sicht ist, dass dadurch existierendes Wissen und Erinnerungen an die Verbrechen fortlaufend diskreditiert und unterdrückt werden. Genauer werden durch institutionelle und soziale Prozesse und Praktiken historische Fakten und andere Beweise, auf denen Erinnerung basiert, nicht nur ignoriert oder vernachlässigt, sondern vorsätzlich verschleiert, verzerrt und fehlinterpretiert. Es wird dadurch schädliches Unwissen und Unverständnis über die historischen Tatsachen und deren normative Bewertung generiert. Dadurch schafft Genozidleugnung nicht nur Wissenssubjekte, die nichts über den Genozid wissen – denn ein bloßer Wissensmangel könnte durch Bereitstellung des nötigen Wissens behoben werden – sondern das Thema verkennen, aktiv Tatsachen leugnen und dadurch die gesellschaftliche Verständigung über das Thema erschweren oder verunmöglichen. Um also besser zu verstehen, welche ethischen und epistemischen Konsequenzen systematische Genozidleugnung für Überlebende und Nachfahren, wie auch die Gesellschaft insgesamt mit sich bringt, schlage ich vor, systematische Genozidleugnung vielmehr als substanzielle Erkenntnispraxis und somit als Fall vorsätzlichen Unwissens zu verstehen. Wie ich am Beispiel der türkischen Leugnung des Genozids an den Armenier:innen illustrieren werde, wird der Genozid nicht vergessen, sondern erinnert und zugleich verkannt, mit der Absicht, Herrschaftsverhältnisse zu konsolidieren. Dadurch wird epistemische Ungerechtigkeit gefördert und aufrechterhalten. (shrink)

Bu çalışmada modern bireyin kendini var etme çabası bağlamında çağ getirisi olarak karşılaştığı problemler, zorunluluklar ve değer yargıları ele alınmıştır. Türkiye özelinde bireyin kendisiyle çatışması, aidiyeti, yaşam biçimi, ahlâkî problemleri ve modern dönemde oluşan dikotomilerden olan kent-taşra ve gelenek-modernite ilişkisi incelenmiştir. Aşırı bireycilik, modernite ile birlikte geleneksel değerlerin önemsizleşmesi ve tüketim odaklı anlık yaşam tarzına geçilmesinin neticesinde oluşan ait olma hissinin kaybı, vicdan ve ahlâk kavramlarının bireylerdeki karşılığı ile birlikte işlenmiştir. Bu çerçevede ahlâk meselesi odak noktayı teşkil etmektedir. Modern iletişim (...) çağında sinema, yaşamın gerçeklerini yansıtma konusunda önemli bir araç haline gelmiştir. Film odaklı sosyal hayat incelemeleri bu doğrultuda önemlidir. Makalede Türkiye’de temelde yaşanan değişim ve dönüşümlerin bireydeki etkileri, modern çağda sosyal hayat, eğitim, din, meslek ve aile mevzuları, Ahlat Ağacı filmi üzerinden irdelenmiştir. Film senaryosu, senaristlerinden biri ve Nuri Bilge Ceylan’ın amcasının oğlu olan Akın Aksu’nun hikayesi üzerine yazılmıştır. Nuri Bilge Ceylan, filmlerinde insan doğasını ve toplumsal sorunları derinlemesine işlemektedir. Gerçekliği filmlerinde doğrudan, birçok yön ve detayıyla göstermeye çalışmaktadır. Ceylan’ın filmleri üst-kurguya sahip eleştirel filmlerdir. Ahlat Ağacı da tüketim toplumunu, kapitalist yaşam biçimini ve bireydeki yansımalarını ince bir alay ve ironi ile sergilediği uzun soluklu yapıtlarındandır. Film, Sinan’ın kendini arama serüveninde karşılaştığı karakterler ile kurduğu ilişkiler doğrultusunda analiz edilmiştir. Nuri Bilge Ceylan’ın filmde yalnızca modernitenin izlerine değil, post-modernitenin sorunlarına da cesurca değindiği ve eleştirilerini de diyaloglarla apaçık şekilde sunduğu görülmüştür. Yapıt, post-modern dönemde çekilmiş ve Türkiye’nin toplumsal sorunlarıyla birlikte çağa ait problemlere de değinmiştir. Bireylerin moderniteyle birlikte kendilik süreçlerinde bağsız, süreksiz ve parçalı yaşam biçimine sürüklenmesi kimlik bunalımlarına sebep olmuştur. Bu durum kişisel olmakla birlikte toplumsal hafızaya müdahaleyi de ifade etmektedir. Taşradan kente geçişte izleri zamanla bulanıklaşsa da gelenek ve modernite ikiliği göze çarpmaktadır. Çalışmada bu bireysel değişimle birlikte aile ve toplumda gerçekleşen değişiklikler de incelenmiştir. Bu bağlamda Ahlat Ağacı’nda başkarakter Sinan’ın yalnızlığı, taşra ve kent, hayalleri ve hayat şartları arasında sıkışmışlığı da taşradan kaçmasıyla başlamış ve taşrada kendini bulmasıyla sonuçlanmıştır. Kendi gerçekliğinden kaçarak tekrar taşraya babasının kaldığı yere dönen Sinan karakterinde değişim içinde süreklilik perspektifi görülmektedir. (shrink)

L’article présente un sceau prismatique du Minoen Moyen mis au jour dans le bâtiment néopalatial Pi à Malia en 2007. Les motifs qu’il porte sur ses trois faces sont particulièrement intéressants en raison de leur rareté dans la glyptique protopalatiale et des comparaisons établies. La figure féminine sur la face (a) semble ainsi représenter une créature hybride, dont le visage apparaît souvent isolément, ou surmontant un corps humain ou animal sur des sceaux du MM, et qui trouve certains parallèles dans (...) des représentations de la divinité égyptienne Bès et de la Gorgone grecque. Le quadrupède de la face (b) est gravé dans une position rarement observée, suggérant un animal enroulé sur lui-même. Les « serpents » flanquant le vase sur la face (c) peuvent être comparés aux éléments similaires associés à un chat sur un prisme protopalatial, ou à la «déesse aux serpents », sur la tête de laquelle est également assis un chat. Ces considérations invitent à conclure que ces représentations sur les prismes véhiculaient une valeur symbolique. (shrink)

Gender discrimination is a reality affecting an important part of the socio-economic life. The study aims to examine, by using quantitative techniques, the main tendencies in the Romanian society regarding gender discrimination, as perceived by the young, educated population. In order to meet the objectives of the study, a cluster sampling was performed among the Romanian students. The results from the statisti- cal sampling were compared to national data from several studies made by national and international organizations. In the final (...) part of the study, the findings of sampling research are validated by a logit model. The model is presenting the main factors that are generating gender discrimination, as well as the most important variables throughout which discrimination is perceived in Romania. (shrink)

Il immerge le marxisme et les socialismes révolutionnaires dans cet ensemble idéologique de longue durée et il les fait voir et fait voir le problème de la légitimation politique sous une perspective neuve. Exploitant des données largement ignorées ou oubliées de nos jours, il provoque des confrontations inattendues, réfute des idées toutes faites et montre des enchaînements qui renouvellent l'histoire des idéologies modernes. Loenen does valuable work in emphasising this, but the observation is not revolutionarily original. Vlastos, following yon Fritz, argued (in Gnomon [1953]) that, for Parmenides, nothing exists but thought. Vlastos' arguments were not on as many fronts as are Loenen's, and Loenen develops the interpretation much further. Aristotle and Simplicius were the first of many who believed Parmenides to be a dualist, to have posited two worlds, fa ata~ra and ~& ~a~a, between which there was no causal relationship. Although there is much originality in Loenen's development and argument for his theses, it is nevertheless true that on the three grounds on which he lays claim to originality (introduction, pp. 3-5), his views have considerable precedents. M. C. SCHOLAR St. John's College, Cambridge Plato and the Individual. By Robert William Hall. (The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff, 1963. Pp. 224.) Professor Hall's main thesis is that Plato's ethical thought underwent a gradual and significant development and that in the face of this fact the mature Plato is neither a halfhearted moral philosopher, nor a utilitarian, but completely committed to the substantiality and immortality of the soul. The first issue is raised so that the claim that Plato reserved the ethical ideal only for the specialists in philosophical reflection can be dismissed as groundless. The second problem is discussed in order to demonstrate beyond doubt that Plato's later moral views went beyond the limited ethics of consequences that dominates the early Socratic dialogues. But it is the third issue that constitutes the core of Hall's book, and the discussion here is undertaken in order to identify the metaphysical principle to which Plato appealed when he reconstructed his ethics from an initially quite aristocratic affair into a publicly available ideal that was rendered universal in scope and attainment. Dr. Hall argues that if knowledge of the Forms is unconditionally required for genuine morality, then only the philosophically gifted can rise to the lofty occasion. Being himself a strong advocate of a moral ideal open to all human beings, Dr. Hall does not hesitate to challenge Plato's views with this formidable problem: If we suppose Plato's views grant to the ordinary individual nothing more than a second class morality, he hardly deserves his reputation as a great ethical thinker. In line with this question the author devotes the entire first chapter to an interesting discussion on the sources of modern democratic individualism as supported by the best in the Christian tradition and then uses his findings to test the strength of Plato's moral fiber. But the author knows all along that Plato will emerge unscathed. His purpo~ then is not so much to show that Plato actually held that view as it is to take the reader through the meandering paths only the modem scholar and erudite interpreter of the dialogues know how to travel best and by which it is believed Plato himself must have been able to reach the summit of the superb answer. Since Dr. Hall discerns two different available moralities in Plato, an "aristocratic" and a "demotic," he also finds it necessary to distinguish between the morality of the excellences of the individual man and the excellence of the philosopher. When all is told, it turns out that Plato's development as an ethical philosopher moves from a high-minded kind of utilitarianism based on arete, inherited from Socrates, to a non-utilitarian conception of virtue which is Plato's own discovery and contribution. Die Abhandlung beginnt mit Reflexionen zur Synthesis, die den historischen und systematischen Rahmen der Untersuchung bestimmen, und erläutert dann Unterscheidungen und Übergänge zwischen Kritik, Transzendentalphilosophie und Metaphysik als Teilen des Systems der reinen Philosophie. Damit wird die verkannte Funktion dieser Systematik in der Aufstellung des apriorischen Leitfadens für den Erkenntnisgebrauch der Vernunft umrissen. Ein Leitfadenproblem, mit dem sich die,,metaphysische Deduktion" der Kategorien beschäftigt, liegt aber (...) zuallererst im Kern der Kritik. Das zweite Kapitel legt diesen verschlüsselten Textabschnitt aus, insbesondere seinen grundlegenden, oft von der Frage nach der Vollständigkeit der Kategorientafel überschatteten Anspruch, die Begriffe a priori der Einheit aller Verstandesfunktionen ‑ der Synthesis der Anschauung und des Urteils ‑ systematisch darzustellen. Die Überlegung zur Verstandesfunktion gibt schließlich Anlass, die bislang nicht hinterfragte Annahme, die Ausdrücke,,reiner Verstandesbegriff" und,,Kategorie" seien bloß Synonyme, in Frage zu stellen. Die Interpretationen vereinigen das Bemühen um eine textnahe Erschließung des Hegelschen Gedankens mit einer Klärung seiner historischen Voraussetzungen und einer Diskussion seiner systematischen Perspektiven. Damit soll nicht nur die 'Seinslogik' ihrer systematischen Bedeutung entsprechend stärker in das Blickfeld der Auseinandersetzung mit Hegel gerückt, sondern es sollen auch Anstöße zu weiteren Forschungen und Diskussionen gegeben werden, die sich weder im bloßen (...) Alain Badiou est platonicien (plutôt platonicien), Barbara Cassin est sophiste (plutôt sophiste). Cela a-t-il quelque chose à voir avec le fait qu'il soit un homme et qu'elle soit une femme? Telle est la question que nous nous posons depuis longtemps. Depuis que nous nous connaissons en somme, et que nous avons commencé à travailler ensemble comme directeurs de collection. A un moment donné, nous avons pris cette question à bras-le-corps.0C'est venu, peut-être, d'une remarque à notre propos disant que, un platonicien (...) avec un(e) sophiste, cet attelage qui ne laissait rien échapper devenait pour de bon dangereux. Nous avons ri, et réfléchi. D'abord, nous avons échangé des lettres, jouant avec le plaisir d'une correspondance sporadique, parfois rauque, pendant trois ans. Au beau milieu de quoi nous avons décidé de faire un séminaire commun ailleurs, loin de nos bases : à Johns Hopkins.0On nous a obligés à répondre sans arrière-monde, Alain Badiou en mathématicien-platonicien, Barbara Cassin en philologue-sophiste. A bras-le-corps donc, mais encore latéralement comme on voit. Nous avons alors ressenti la nécessité d'exhiber les éléments clefs à quoi tiennent nos positions, ce qui philosophiquement nous tient.
